Erie, Illinois -- Despite it being GEICO/American Honda JG Off Road's Scott Watkins first time at the Rekluse MoonShine XC OMA, he was able to take advantage of slick conditions to run in the lead for part of the day before grabbing another top three finish.
"The guys had a nice showing out there," said team co-owner JT Bennett. "It unfortunately sounds like Jimmy's woes continue though with the bad luck. But he'll get the bad luck out of the way and have some nice rides the second half. The team did a great job representing the team there."
Watkins nailed the start to ride up front for the first lap before pulling into the lead. Watkins was able to lead for a few laps before Defending Champion Paul Whibley moved in to take over. The trio of Watkins, Whibley and Jordan Ashburn battled once again before Whibley pulled away, leaving Watkins and Ashburn to battle until the end.
"Jordan ended up pulling away and getting second with me in third for today," Watkins said. "The track was pretty cool and had a little bit of everything in it. Today went really well."
Rory Mead jumped into the mix as well today, finishing his first OMA event.
"Today went pretty good," Mead said. "I enjoyed the track even if it was a little bit tighter than what I'm used to."
Mead finished the day in fourth place, despite connecting with a tree early on and mashing in his radiator.
"I had a good time and it was good practice for the GNCCs," Mead added.
Jimmy Jarrett also fired off the start to stay in the front pack but while his race started well, it ended on another unfortunate note, as his bike had a mechanical malfunction. Jarrett's day ended on the fourth lap.
"I got a good start and was right there with everyone," he said. "Everyone was going back and forth and I thought it was going to be a really good day. Something happened to my bike on the fourth lap, and I just couldn't get it started back up."
The JG Off Road Team heads next to the Mountain Ridge GNCC in Somerset, Pennsylvania on September 25th.
