Record rainfall in the surrounding area seemed to have little effect on the Unadilla track. Somehow the 13 odd inches of rain late in the week resulted in one of the driest Unadilla races I've ever done!!
The start went great again, snatching the hole shot and leading the way in the early going. Kailub Russell and Charlie Mullins were close behind and within a couple of miles had moved by, dropping me to 3rd. I was riding a little tight and struggled to get into a rhythm on the slick rock based track. Over the first lap I kept Kailub and Charlie in sight but over the second lap they eased away. Soon I had pressure from Chris Bach and Nate Kanney, still my lines were not coming together and both of them made easy pickings of me. The laps were fairly short and we were soon into lapped riders.
The gas stop went smoothly with Scotty, Katherine and Gary having me in and out Nascar quick. I was getting regular pit boards on the gap to Bach and Kanney and it kept growing, soon it was out to nearly 30 seconds. At about this time I thought that was enough and after getting a little mad at myself, managed to loosen up and start to lay down some good laps. I began to erase the gap Bach and Kanney had built.
With a couple laps to go I had them in my sights and kept the pressure on. I quickly made some passes and moved up to third and by the end of the race had put some time between us. Charlie and Kailub had both put in great rides and had built a gap I wasn't going to bridge.
