With the GNCC series taking some time off for the summer, defending champion and current series points leader Josh Strang decided to head out west and battle with some of the WORCS competitors. Washougal, Washington was the site of the seventh round of WORCS racing this past weekend and the legendary facility welcomed the racers with a nice mix of motocross, trails, and grass track.
Strang got off the line well in both races and was immediately battling up front with WORCS title contenders, Kurt Caselli and Mike Brown. Taking advantage of the pit stops by Brown, Strang was able to move into second place in each race and pressure Caselli for the lead. While he would get within striking distance multiple times throughout the two-hour races, Strang ultimately finished second on both days, earning second overall for the weekend.
"Second overall is pretty good for my first WORCS race this year," said Strang. "I'd like to come to another round and see if I can improve my finish. I'd like to win one of these."
In the ATV class, defending champion Josh Frederick got out to a top three start and began stalking the leaders around the five-mile course. Just before the halfway point, Frederick moved into the lead and never looked back, finishing more than a minute ahead of the closest competitor. With his second WORCS win of the year, Frederick has closed the gap for the overall series lead to just five points with only three rounds remaining.
The eighth round of WORCS action will take place at the infamous Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif. on September 18 - 20 (Bikes) and September 23 - 25 (ATV).
The seventh round of the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals was also this past weekend and Scott Watkins put in a strong ride to claim third place honors. The eighth round of OMA racing comes on September 17 - 28 in Erie, Ill. for the Moonshine XC.
