Welcome to Quick Fill. We're heading to Loretta Lynn Ranch again.
So our crew is looking at nearly a month down in Tennessee, but these are the two biggest motocross races of their kind-the biggest bike race and the biggest ATV race. It takes that kind of work to make them happen, and if you've ever gone to either race, you know that these are special events.
In year's past, a few GNCC stars have qualified for Loretta's to give motocross a shot, but this year I haven't seen that many big names on the list. Perhaps the biggest name is ex-XC2 podium contender Andrew Matusek, who has stopped racing GNCC to focus on motocross and Lorettas this summer. Matusek actually won a moto title at the Ranch back in his younger days, so he's hoping to find that old magic again.
One rider who did race the event last year was Jimmy Jarrett, but Jimmy isn't going to be doing any racing this summer. Click here for the Cycle News report on Jimmy breaking his wrist.
Last week we said we expected some GNCC names to surface for this weekend's GEICO EnduroCross opener, and indeed it happened as GNCC bike points leader Paul Whibley has announced he'll give the race a shot. How will he do? No clue, EnduroCross is a totally different deal compared to GNCC.
Here's a cool summer update on Snowshoe XC2 winner Jason Thomas. Click here.
And don't forget Rachel "Randomn Task" Fluharty's Tuesday Toolbox with ISDE Rookie Cory Buttrick. Click here.
And our friends at HiPer Wheel are pumped on their riders through the first segment of the GNCC season. Click here to read about their success.
Our buddy Shane Watts, the 2000 GNCC Champion, checked it to tell us he has a new DVD available, Advanced Techniques Vol. 1, Mud, Sand and Rough Ground. I gave the DVD a watch and can tell you it not only shows some cool advanced techniques, but it also shows you great ways to practice and learn them yourself. Visit ShaneWatts.com - that site is blowing up.
Here's a really cool note from Davey Coombs himself, the editor in cheif of Racer XIllustrated next door:
From time to time we bring up the Blackwater 100 here, usually when my brother Tim "1988 Blackwater 100 Champ" Coombs walks in and brings it up himself. From 1975 through '93, it was America's Toughest Race-and in those pre-Erzberg, pre-Romaniacs days, probably the toughest race in the world. My dad was the promoter of the race, which took place in the tiny town of Davis, West Virginia, on Father's Day Weekend every June. The men who really put it on the map were guys like Rick "Super Hunky" Seiman, Paul Clipper, Tom "Wolfman" Webb and Vic Krause-the original Dirt Bike Magazine wrecking crew and The Beatles of off-road magazine staffs. Super Hunky has long since retired (and he needs to be in the AMA Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, if anyone wants to help write up a nomination?) but he recently put out a compilation of his Blackwater 100 memories, stories, photos and more. If you're a fan of off-road fun and excellent motorcycle journalism, check it out:

Finally, congrats out to Steward Baylor, who has now wrapped up the overall Championship in the SET&RA Series. Not bad for a youngster!
That's it for Quick Fill this week. The riders are on break, and our crew is getting acclimated to the searing heat and humidity at The Ranch. If you've got a few free days, come on down and join us, it will be a trip you'll never forget. For info on the bike AMA Amateur National, go to www.mxsports.com .
